What is Sambo?

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of Sambo, a martial art and combat sport that started in the 1920s with the Soviet Red Army. The name “Sambo” comes from the Russian phrase SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya, which means “self-defense without weapons.” It’s a unique blend of judo, jujutsu, wrestling, and practical self-defense techniques. Together, we’ll explore its origins, history, and what makes it stand out.

Sambo Founding Fathers: Oshchepkov, Spiridonov, and Kharlampiev

Sambo wouldn’t exist without some brilliant minds leading the way. Vasili Oshchepkov was one of the key figures behind its creation. He was a Soviet martial arts expert who introduced judo to the Soviet Union. After training at the famous Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, he became the first Russian to earn a second dan in judo. Oshchepkov’s skills and creativity helped shape the self-defense techniques that were eventually adopted by the Soviet Red Army and their intelligence teams.

Viktor Spiridonov and Anatoly Kharlampiev, two of Oshchepkov’s students, also played huge roles in Sambo’s development. Each brought their own unique style to the mix, and when their ideas came together, they formed the foundation for Sambo’s versatile and effective approach.

Sambo Fighting Styles

Sport Sambo: Mixing Wrestling, Judo, and Self-Defense

Sport Sambo is like a mix of judo and jiu-jitsu, bringing together techniques from different martial arts into one awesome style. It all started in the Soviet Union and was officially recognized as a sport in 1938 by the USSR All-Union Sports Committee. Today, the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) keeps the sport alive and growing, making sure Sambo is shared and celebrated all over the world.

Combat Sambo: Where Martial Arts Meet

Combat Sambo is a high-energy mix of MMA and self-defense techniques with a military twist. It’s packed with striking, grappling, and even disarming moves, giving us a powerful set of tools for both sport and real-life situations. What makes Combat Sambo stand out is its use of weapons, making it one of the most well-rounded martial arts out there.

Beach Sambo: Action on the Sand

Beach Sambo takes the excitement of the sport to the sand and sun. With shorter matches and simplified rules, it’s all about fast-paced action. Separate categories for men and women make the competition even more exciting, and the beach setting adds a fun twist to this classic sport.

Self-Defense Sambo: Smart Protection

Self-Defense Sambo is all about staying calm and using an attacker’s energy against them. Inspired by Jujitsu and Aikido, it focuses on smart moves and minimal effort to take control of a situation. This style teaches us how to turn aggression into a chance to defend ourselves with confidence.

Special Sambo: Built for the Best

Special Sambo is designed for elite military and rapid-response teams. It’s based on Combat Sambo but tailored to meet the specific needs of these high-stakes units. This version shows just how adaptable Sambo is, proving it can handle even the toughest challenges.

Difference Between Sambo Vs Judo

A Look into the Differences While Judo and Sambo share historical parallels, they diverge in many crucial aspects. Judo, a grappling-centric art, centers on takedowns, control, and submissions, while Sambo’s legacy lies in the realm of submissions and ground work. Chokeholds, permitted in judo, find no place in Sport Sambo, emphasizing Sambo’s submission-focused approach. But they are allowed in Combat Sambo. Victory and Techniques In Sport Sambo, non twisting leg locks are fair game, setting it apart from judo where they have been banned pre world war II. Moreover, while Judo allows victory through pinning an opponent, Sambo rewards points for such a move. Each art offers unique avenues for victory, with Sambo embracing a more ground-oriented approach that encourages strategic submissions.

Winning in the World of Sambo

Sambo’s scoring system hinges on points, with victory attained through point accumulation or a lead of 12 points. A forceful takedown resulting in a fall on the back secures success, while submission serves as another pathway to triumph. In judo, perfection is epitomized in the ippon throw, complemented by pinning an opponent or executing an almost perfect throw.

Gear Up: Attire and Equipage

Sambo practitioners sport a kurtka top paired with wrestling-style shorts and boots. In contrast, judo competitors don a full Gi and belt. This distinction in attire underscores the nuanced divergence between the two disciplines.

The Sands of Time: Origins and Duration

SAMBO’s origins trace back to the 1920s, birthed by the innovation of the Soviet Red Army. Judo, an elder cousin, hails from 1880s Japan. Match duration differentiates the two arts, with SAMBO contests lasting 5 minutes, while judo’s timeframe varies according to age and category.

What if I already do Judo, Jiu Jitsu or Wrestling, can I progress faster?

You probably will progress faster than others that are beginners, but the goal should be to learn Combat Sambo because you do not have Sambo Near Me and are truly interested and not just for a belt.

Can I really get promoted online through Combat Sambo Arizona video training?

Yes you can, but only for your first belt which is Yellow belt. All other belts you will be able to test in Texas or Florida.

Can I just learn this stuff on YouTube?

It is up to you. If you watch the training videos from your couch and don't drill the moves, then prooooobably not. Your results will be based on your dedication. BUT, if you practice the moves and do 100's of correct repetitions with your training partner with no resistance and then start applying the techniques with gradual resistance, then yes. We always recommend that you supplement this training with a Judo, Jiu Jitsu, or wrestling gym where you have training partners and can see some of these moves in class. So many of this curriculum will overlap with your regular gym techniques. Remember, you are here because you could not find Combat Sambo Near Me. But now you have!

I am a Judo, Jiu Jitsu or Wrestling Coach with a Gym, Can I add this martial art to my gym?

Yes, you can, please email us to talk about it. We do NOT just take your experience and make you a Coach. That would be garbage and watering down this fighting style. There are already people doing that which is F*&# Up.

I am already a Sambo coach. Can I be a coach for Russiansambo.com by Grappling University?

100%! We would just have to deeply and thoroughly get information on your training and coach to make sure you are not one of these affiliate gyms that was allowed to fly a Sambo banner but you actually NEVER trained it.

Can I get this on DVD's?

What is a DVD? Haha, JK. No, unfortunately that would increase the cost and that is not our goal. It is to spread Authentic Sambo to those that do not have it. If there is a Sambo Wrestling gym by you, go there!

I think that online training is garbage, and you should not get promoted online.

Perfect! You are DEFINITELY not the person we want to be part of GU. But somehow you still ended up here trolling. LOL! Oh, and btw...Yellow belt is the only we are having people do that for. Everything else is in person.

It says FREE...is it really though?

YES! Yellow belt curriculum is for you to test drive our online Sambo training program. We want committed athletes that like what we have. It is like getting a 7 Day pass or 30 Days free at a local gym. We understand it will not be for everyone, and we are ok with that. There will be SOOO many haters out there and we understand and are ok with it. If you have haters in life, then you are doing something right.

Can I get ready to compete while going through any of the curriculum?

Yes, for sure! BUT, if you are just watching the videos and not practicing...you will get destroyed. If you are not doing 100's of reps....you will get destroyed. If you are not doing position/technical sparring...you will get destroyed. If you are not going live with a resisting opponent.... you will get destroyed. You get the point, what you put into it, is what you get! It would be the same result in a local gym.
