- Sport Sambo: Focuses mainly on grappling and takedowns. Imagine Judo and different Wrestling styles, focusing on throws, submissions, and ground control. Chokes are not allowed in Sport Sambo. This is the version you see in local Sambo competitions.

What Do Sambo Practitioners Wear?
When we step onto the mat for Sport Sambo or Combat Sambo, we suit up in some unique gear only used in Sambo. These are essential to Combat and Sport. First, there’s the kurtka, a thick jacket with reinforced shoulders for gripping. The jacket also has hole in which we weave our belt through so it does not fall during every technique that we perform. Then we wear shorts that are sturdy but flexible that allow freedom of movement. On our feet, we have Sambo shoes called Sambovki which offer grip without being too bulky.
Key Pieces of Sambo Gear:
- Kurtka (Jacket Top): Reinforced jacket that is similar to Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Has extra cloth on the shoulders for more grips which allows for more throwing techniques. Holes to slide the belt through so the belt won’t keep falling off.
- Shorts: Durable and flexible which allow free movement for high kicks and quick movement.
- Sambo Shoes (Sambovki): Lightweight, ususally made out of leather, providing good traction and smooth transitions to turning throws.

Cultural Significance and Modern Popularity
Sambo has a fascinating place in our world culture.
- History: Created in the Soviet Union, it mixes various traditional fighting styles from Eastern Europe and Asia, promoting unity. Over time, it became a symbol of unity, blending techniques from various cultures to form one united martial art.
